What if we told you that you can colour your hair without damaging it by using only natural, safe and non-polluting products?
This is now a reality with plant-based colouring. Find out what natural colouring is and all its advantages.
What is plant-based hair colouring?
When chemical colours are used, the product forces open the fibres and penetrates the hair, destroying the melanin (the natural hair pigment) and replacing it with artificial pigments. This process is not only very damaging to the hair but also potentially harmful to our health, as the chemicals penetrate the scalp and enter the bloodstream.
Plant-based hair colouring is a more hair-friendly alternative that is good for your health. Made exclusively from plant extracts, it surrounds the hair with a protective coloured sheath and does not penetrate the hair fibre. Plant-based hair colour is a tone-on-tone colour: it works like a coloured “layer” on your hair to give it the chosen shade. The colour reflects all the little variations naturally present in your hair for a very natural result.

Is plant-based colour organic?
The term “plant-based colour”, sometimes also referred to as “natural colour”, often implies that this type of dye contains ingredients harvested with no risk to the environment.
However, this is not always the case: the “organic” label is only awarded to dyes that meet strict criteria for plant cultivation and processing. To ensure that a plant-based hair colour is organic, always check for the “organic” label on the product packaging.
The IVIVE plant-based colour has the organic label, but not only that!
Our seven dyes are also certified Vegan and Fair For Life. All our colours are made from four dyeing agents:
- Organic Henna: we extract the pigments from deep within the leaves of our organic Henna to produce two patented extracts, offering a range of colours from blond to brown.
- Organic Sorghum: we recover the red pigments from the plant’s dried leaves to produce intense auburn to brown hues.
- Organic Gardenia: we have developed a patented extract from the fruit of the Gardenia plant that produces luminous blond shades.
- Alfalfa: the chlorophyll extracted from alfalfa allows us to colour the hair with more ashy shades – a real innovation in plant-based colouring.

What colours can be achieved with plant-based colour?
Long limited to auburn colours, plant-based hair colouring is now available in a wide range of colours, from blond to dark brown.
However, since it is tone-on-tone colouring, the colours are somewhat more limited than with chemical colouring. For example, hair cannot be lightened with plant-based colours as this requires chemicals to be introduced into the hair to bleach it via a process called oxidation. Since it is tone on tone, plant-based colour does not allow you to go from one extreme to the other: for example, a person with blond hair can choose from golden, auburn or even light brown shades but they cannot dye their hair black with plant-based colour because it is too different to their natural colour.
The IVIVE range consists of seven colour shades:
Natural pearly blond, pure golden blond, pure auburn, natural auburn, natural auburn light brown and golden natural light brown. IVIVE colourists are trained to select the most appropriate shade based on your natural colour and its nuances, revealing intense highlights in your hair.
Why choose a plant-based hair colour?
Plant-based colour is the alternative of choice for those who want to intensify their hair colour or soften the appearance of white hair without damaging their hair. By sheathing the hair fibre, plant-based colouring is an effective treatment that protects the hair from external aggressors.
Choosing plant-based hair colour is also a way of doing something for the environment and your health by giving up chemical products for a more natural and equally effective alternative.
Which hair types is plant-based colour intended for?
Plant-based colour is suitable for all hair types. It is intended for people who want to colour their hair to give it a natural shine without damaging it. It is particularly recommended for people with weakened hair.
If you have greying hair and would like to restore shine and radiance, plant-based colour is ideal as it covers white hair in a natural way.
It is also recommended for pregnant women and people who have undergone chemotherapy and cannot use chemical colours. This is because the ingredients in plant-based colouring coat the hair and do not enter the bloodstream so they are not harmful to you or your baby.
How does a plant-based colour work?
The first step to achieving a plant-based colour is to wash your hair with a protective shampoo, such as René Furterer’s CURBICIA clay shampoo.
The dye powder is then mixed with hot water to give it a paste-like consistency. This paste is applied section by section, starting at the root. The IVIVE colour should then be applied for 30-45 minutes under a heated cap. This is a very short application time in contrast to other traditional plant-based colours which require at least two hours. With IVIVE, enjoy a relaxing time-out and let your hairdresser pamper you.
After the application time has elapsed, the hair is rinsed with clean water to remove any colour residue. Do not use shampoo for 48 hours after your plant-based colour treatment to avoid interrupting the oxidation of the dyeing agents. The colour will change slightly over these first two days until it reaches the desired shade.
With IVIVE professional plant-based colour, dyeing your hair naturally is more enjoyable than ever.
How long does a plant-based colour last?
In general, plant-based colour lasts from a few weeks to a month. With IVIVE, we recommend that you go back to your colourist four weeks after the first colour treatment. You can then space out the sessions more and more and make your colour last for up to five or six weeks.
Is plant-based colour compatible with chemical dye?
Traditional plant-based colouring is not compatible with chemical colouring: if you want to switch from one to the other, wait until your last hair colour has completely gone before making the change. Chemical pigments and natural dyeing agents react chemically and mixing the two may result in an unexpected hair colour.
IVIVE is the only plant-based colour on the market compatible with chemical colour: you can, for example, use IVIVE to contour your chemical hair colour or perform a chemical balayage over your natural IVIVE colour.
Which plant-based colour should I choose?
When choosing your hair colour, make sure you choose a product made from organic ingredients that are environmentally friendly and kind to your hair. Professional plant-based colour is often safer than plant-based dyes to apply at home as it is not always easy to choose the right colour yourself.
This is because plant-based colouring is tone on tone, which means that the result will be different for each hair type. And if your hair is uneven (bleached strands, white hair, etc.), the concentration of the dye mixture may need to be modified depending on the section it is applied to. A professional colourist will take all these factors into account and be able to guide you to the right shade and apply it evenly.
