You're keen to try natural plant-based colouring and you’ve heard of blond henna? We’ll tell you how it works, its benefits and the plant-based colours available for blond hair.

Organic plant-based colouring for blond hair: how does it work?

Plant-based colour contains extracts of dye plants, such as henna, sorghum and gardenia. It contains no chemicals and colours the hair without penetrating the hair fibre. The dyeing agents set around the hair, forming a coloured sheath which modifies the colour through transparency. It is a tone-on-tone colour: if some sections of your hair are a naturally lighter blond than others, your plant-based colour will reflect these shades.

How does henna colour blond hair?

Henna is one of the main ingredients in plant-based colours for blond hair. It contains lawsone, a dyeing agent that produces blond to auburn tones. Henna also sets the colour on the hair and works as a protective treatment. It is therefore essential in plant-based colours with blond and auburn highlights.

The blond henna in IVIVE colours is 100% natural, organically grown and Fair For Life certified.

Is plant-based colouring suitable for blond hair?

Vegan colour works particularly well on blond hair: this type of colouring does not lighten the hair so people with light hair have the most colour options. Choose from golden blond, intense auburn, light chestnut or even a cooler shade such as IVIVE's ash blond.

Can it be applied to bleached hair?

If your hair has been bleached blond and you want to use a plant-based colour, be careful: most plant-based colours are not compatible with chemical colours and, if combined, the results may be disconcerting (dull colour, green highlights, etc.).

IVIVE is the only plant-based colour that is fully compatible with chemical colours. You can use it on your bleached hair without no problems. However, IVIVE is still a tone-on-tone colour: if you stop bleaching your roots, the shade will differ from your lengths. A professional colourist will be able to help you choose appropriate shades for your roots and lengths for an even result.

Can henna plant-based colour make hair blond?

To bleach hair, oxidizing substances must be used to destroy the pigment in the hair fibre. This is a relatively aggressive process that is only possible with chemical dyes. You cannot therefore lighten your hair with a blond henna colour.

Does henna leave red highlights in blond hair?

Henna is known for its coppery hue and those unfamiliar with plant-based colouring often fear they will end up with unwanted red highlights.

IVIVE’s organic plant-based colours leave no red highlights: they have been formulated in a very precise and balanced way to achieve the blond of your choice with no coppery highlights (except, of course, when copper is the desired effect). Some highlights may appear during the first 48 hours after colouring as the colour is still setting; but they disappear very quickly.

IVIVE even gives you the option of choosing an ash blond shade with cool highlights – a colour unheard of in plant-based colouring as henna usually provides warm tones.

However, be careful if you decide to colour your hair yourself with blond henna, or even create your own colouring mixture: it is very easy to use too much and end up with a much more coppery shade than expected. It is therefore best to go for a professional hair colour to avoid this kind of inconvenience.

Which plant-based colour should I choose for blond hair?

If you have blond hair, a wide range of shades are available to you: very light blond, golden blond, red, intense auburn, light chestnut, etc. The only unsuitable colours are very dark colours as they are too different from your natural colour.
