You want to do a plant-based colour treatment and you're not sure which colour to choose. Here's a quick overview of chestnut brown plant-based dyes and the colours available for brunettes.

What is plant-based colouring?

Plant-based colouring is a safer and healthier alternative to chemical colouring. Instead of destroying the pigments inside the hair, the plant-based dye surrounds the hair fibre, forming a protective and colourful sheath that changes hair colour through transparency. The result: shiny hair with natural highlights.

Is plant-based colour suitable for chestnut brown hair?

Plant-based colour works particularly well on chestnut brown hair, allowing you to achieve a variety of colours while maintaining a very natural appearance. It has many advantages.

  • By enveloping the hair fibre, the plant-based colour protects the hair from external aggressors. Unlike chemical colour which weakens and damages the hair, plant-based colour works like a protective treatment.
  • Because it remains on the surface, plant-based colour does not affect your blood vessels, unlike chemical colours. So it can also be used by pregnant women and people undergoing intensive medical treatment.
  • Plant-based colour contains natural ingredients such as henna, gardenia and sorghum. IVIVE formulas are also certified organic, vegan and Fair For Life.
  • With their very natural highlights, plant-based colours do not create a root effect when your hair grows back.

Which is the best plant-based colour for chestnut brown hair?

Those with chestnut brown hair can choose from several shades, ranging from auburn to brown. The lighter your hair, the more you can opt for lighter shades. However, plant-based dye cannot lighten a colour; for this, the hair must be bleached through an aggressive process known as oxidation, which is only possible with chemical colours.

The IVIVE range of plant-based colours consists of four colours for chestnut brown hair: pure auburn, natural auburn, natural auburn light brown and golden natural light brown. Your colourist will advise you by looking closely at your hair. They will then guide you to the shade that will give you the most natural results.

How do we dye hair brown with plant-based colour?

Plant-based dye works through transparency: it forms a sheath around the hair, applying a coloured "layer" over your natural colour. So you cannot go from one extreme to the other (from blond to black, for example).

If you have dark blond, light chestnut or auburn hair, you can achieve a light chestnut shade. If your hair is chestnut, light brown or coppery brown, you can achieve a darker shade of brown. Those with up to 30% white hair can also achieve a chestnut or brown colour. Any higher and your colourist will direct you to a lighter shade.

Is plant-based colouring as effective as chemical colouring?

Plant-based colouring is just as effective as chemical colouring: it is permanent and long-lasting with intense highlights.

The biggest difference between plant-based and chemical colouring is that the shades achieved with plant-based colouring are much more natural, whereas chemical colouring allows for more exotic colours.

Which active ingredients are used to colour chestnut hair?

Brown plant-based colours are made from plants known for their dyeing properties. These include:

  • Henna: the ultimate colouring plant which offers a range of colours from blond to brown;
  • Sorghum: which produces auburn to brown tones;
  • Alfalfa: which reveals ashy shades.

Unlike other plant-based colours, IVIVE is made from patented plant extracts and not from ground whole plants. This means that much less product will achieve the same result, guaranteeing a more pleasant experience and a much shorter application time than with traditional plant-based colours.
