Dyed and highlighted hair: how can you keep its tones vibrant and shiny?

Updated on , validated by our team of René Furterer experts.

Who doesn't want their hair to look as shiny as the day they stepped out of the hairdresser's? Whatever we do, the colour and its glints will always fade over time. The good news is that by following a few essential steps, we can keep our dyed hair's tones looking fresh for longer - or at least until our next hair appointment!
Learn about our experts' secrets to ensuring your hair keeps its gorgeous glints.

How long does it take for tones to fade after dyeing your hair?

You may have noticed that your colour's slowly fading since you dyed your hair or gave it a balayage, and it's beginning to look dull.
This is perfectly normal: even the strongest permanent colours will oxidize over time. As a general rule, dyed hair generally looks fresh for about 8 washes (or one month if you wash your hair twice a week).
By using a special shampoo enriched with colour-fixing active ingredients, your colour should last a few weeks longer. Even so, you'll need to give your colour a regular freshen-up to  keep it looking fab.

Which colours retain their tones the longest?

The closer your dye is to your hair's natural shade, the longer its tones will last. For example, if you've used a light brown dye on blonde hair, the ash and golden blonde tones will last for longer, as they're part of your natural hair colour.
On the other hand, if you go for a drastically different colour (for example adding blonde highlights to black hair, or going for a zesty electric blue), you'll need more frequent touch-ups to keep a healthy shine.

Haircare routine to preserve and revive your hair's shiny tones

Following the right haircare routine means your lovely colour and shine will last for longer. Here are the three essential treatments for coloured and highlighted hair to keep it shiny and luscious-looking.

Opt for a colour-protection shampoo

Wetting our hair in the shower or bath can cause our hair to lose its healthy shine. Why? Because hot water opens the hair shaft's cuticles, giving the pigments an escape route. It's a gradual process that you may not notice on a daily basis... Until several weeks later, when you realise your hair's looks dull.
Fortunately, you can slow down this process thanks to active ingredients that fix colours and help maintain a natural shine. For example, colour-protection shampoos enriched with ORGANIC Lemon Essential Oil and ORGANIC Witch hazel Extract have natural pigment-fixing active ingredients.

A repairing mask for dyed hair

Porous or dry hair loses its glints faster because the hair shaft can't hold the dye as well as normal hair. This is why applying a repairing mask is highly recommended, not just to keep your hair healthy, but also to make your shine last longer.

A shine-protection cream

Heated appliances are common culprits when it comes to dull dyed or highlighted hair. Heat causes the hair shaft's cuticles to open causing colour to leach out. This results in a duller colour with fewer glints.
To avoid this, apply a heat-protection styling cream enriched with restructuring active ingredients such as a  ORGANIC Okara to strengthen the hair shaft and protect it from the heat while you style your hair.

Our tips to keep your looking lovely and shiny

Here are some tips from our experts to keep your mane looking healthy and shiny. These are tried and tested methods,  whether your hair is dyed, highlighted or natural!

Avoid external aggressions

UV rays, saltwater, chlorine, pollution, poor-quality products… We're surrounded by harmful elements.
Whenever you can, avoid exposing your hair to bad weather and harmful particles. If you can't, give your hair a fighting chance by wearing a scarf or applying a protective haircare product.

Use a vinegar-based treatment

Vinegar has long been a go-to ingredient thanks to its astringent properties, which also works well on hair. Thanks to its acidic pH, it removes hard water deposits and seals the hair shaft's cuticles for an instant shine.
Acerola vinegar is particularly popular in haircare as it's rich in Vitamin C, an oxidant that's known to protect hair.
