Henna

Updated on , validated by our team of René Furterer experts.

Henna is certainly the most emblematic of the dye plants, the one that has been used for the longest time.

It is a small shrub of 1.5 m to 2.5 m which is cultivated in hot and arid zones of Africa and Asia, from Morocco to India passing by Egypt, Yemen and Pakistan.

Henna is used in the composition of almost all plant-based dyes by all brands in varying proportions. It is also used to color the skin or to make ephemeral tattoos that can have a spiritual meaning. Henna is also used to color textile fibers that contain proteins (silk and wool).

RENOWNED SINCE ANTIQUITY

Henna is one of the oldest beauty products in the world. It dates back thousands of years.

Mentioned in Egypt in the 1550-year-old Ebers papyrus, henna had already been used to color the hair, feet and hands of Ramesses II.

A symbol of protection, henna is highly present in Maghrebi and Indian cultures.

Flowers contain an essential oil with a very pleasant fragrance and the seeds of an oil that is sought to strengthen and enhance the hair.

NATURALNESS AND EFFECTIVENESS

In coloring, Henna leaves are usually used as plant powder to which water is added to form a paste.

The compounds responsible for its dyeing properties belong to two chemical families:

• Polyphenols (composed of flavonoids, acetophenones, coumarins and tannins) are plant substances that color the hair darker and help the color to stick.

• Lawsone (a member of the naphthoquinone family) is used to color hair from blonde to copper.

Our 100% natural henna, sourced from organic farming and Fair For Life certified, comes from Morocco's Ouarzazate region. It is obtained by manually harvesting the leaves, leaving it to dry and finally grinding it into a powder. From there, our research laboratory has developed two new and patented extracts:

• Polar Henna extract to lock in color for a long time.

• Lipophilic Henna extract to create a wide range of colors from blonde to light brown.
